Normally we format out USB Flash Drives with FAT / FAT 32 Files systems. In Fact, Windows XP can format your USB Pen Drive in NTFS, just you have to make some changes to make it work. I am posting here a simple tutorial which will guide you through the entire procedure.Enabling NTFS on flash drives might have several benefits which is listed below.
Why should I Format USB Drive with NTFS File System :
It allows the use of file compression to stretch the capacity of your disk. You can use NTFS to allow and deny permissions for individual files and folders in XP, which you can’t do with FAT.
Follow the simple steps :
1.Right click My Computer and select Manage.
2.Click on the Device Manager at the left side window
3.Now click on Disk Drives, select your USB Pen Drive, Right Click on it and select Properties.
4.Choose Policies tab and select the “Optimize for performance” option & Click OK.
5.Now go to My Computer, Right Click on the USB Pen Drive and select Format Option.
6.You will see the NTFS option in the dropdown box, so just select NTFS in the File System dropdown box.
7.That’s it. You are done.

Note : To remove a device safely without data loss use a “safely remove hardware” procedure or Eject function from Windows Explorer.
